Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei) were nearly extinct in the early 1980s, with the population having reduced to 254 in 1981. They have been working over the decades to try and reverse this decline in conservation programs. The number of mountain gorillas increased to over a thousand worldwide by 2018 with 604 in the Virunga Massif which is spread over Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This success has not come out of the blues. It came through what experts call “extreme conservation.” These gorillas are followed every day by rangers, trackers, and veterinarians.
