What is Sustainable Tourism

The World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities. It ensures that tourism protects the current and future interests while minimizing the negative impacts.

In the Rio+20 Conference, sustainable tourism was defined as one of the contributors to the three pillars of sustainable development.

Simply put, the concept refers to a sustainable practice for all activities during a visit. It promotes responsible practices across all tourism activities and accelerates environmental preservation and social well-being.

Why Sustainable Tourism Matters

GSTC Criteria set the global standard for sustainability in travel and tourism. The criteria are mostly to educate and raise awareness. The importance of sustainable tourism is understood by these standards. There are four pillars of it:

  1. Sustainable management;
  2. Socioeconomic impacts;
  3. Cultural impacts; and
  4. Environmental impacts.

Tourism contributes to 10% of global GDP and provides one in ten jobs worldwide. However, this quick growth doesn’t come alone. There are significant environmental and social challenges, such as resource depletion, habitat destruction, and cultural erosion. To meet them, sustainable tourism is important.

Besides, the need for sustainable tourism is important for:

  1. Mitigating environmental impact
  2. Cultural preservation
  3. Economic benefits
  4. Conserving resources, etc.

As sustainable tourism supports environmental and cultural preservation, it also binds economic growth in the same thread. Uganda is already practicing the approach and has become a role model for other countries.

A Brief Overview of the Tourism Sector in Uganda

Uganda has a diverse landscape and offers unique beauty. The country is the largest natural sanctuary for silverback gorillas. Besides, there are chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, and over a thousand bird species. All these attractions are making tourism an independent and powerful industry for the economic growth of Uganda. These attractions are driving the country towards major economic growth.

In 2018, tourism generated 7.75% of GDP and 6.7% of total national employment. Uganda received 1.5 million international visitors in that year. However, the industry suffered a setback during the COVID-19 pandemic. It brought a disaster to the industry.

From March to June 2020, tourism suffered a decline of approximately 55%, while other sectors suffered only moderate drops. The travel and tourism sector contributed 2.5% to Uganda’s GDP in 2020.

But the sector rebounded in 2022 and contributed about $1.6 billion to the economy. With an annual growth rate of 6-7%, it will deliver a massive turnover and ROI for both local and international investors.
