“It’s believing in God, which makes all things possible.” 

One of the two women murmured. She’s part of a small group of 13 Ugandan climbers who set out on a journey to climb Margarita Peak. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funded the expedition, which aimed to showcase the beauty of Rwenzori Mountain. 

The adventure unfolds as the UNDP country representative and elite runner Joshua Cheptegei is flagged off. The small group also has Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board, and kickboxing champion Golola Moses with it. The journey begins with small steps, but with a big hope of representing the country before the world. 

As the excitement builds, the group has an experience they could only have by coming to the mountain. This is the beauty of the Rwenzori Mountain, the Mountains of the Moon.

The Rwenzori Mountain is one of the natural wonders in Uganda. Although the country relies on agriculture, it has a huge tourism sector to support the economy. In this article, we will explore the details of the Rwenzori Mountains and everything surrounding them.

Rwenzori Mountain, also known as the Mountain of the Moon, is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Uganda and a natural wonder.

The Mountain is a permanent source of the Nile River and hosts a vast and diverse biodiversity, including wildlife and trees.

Investing in the activities centered around the Rwenzori Mountain is a great option because of its high return and sustainability.

It is often said that you may know the highest peaks like the Alps and the Caucasus, the Himalayas, and the Rockies, but if you haven’t seen the Rwenzori Mountain, you still have a lot to see.

Rwenzori Mountain got its name from rwe nzururu, which means “place of snow” in the Bakonzo language. The name reflects the snow-capped peaks of the mountain. It is located between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It ranged about 120 kilometers long and 60 kilometers wide. The highest peak, Marhgherita, stands at 5,109m.

Uganda has three UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of them. The mountains are expanded among four districts: Kasese, Kabarole, Ntoroko, and Bundibugyo. 

It features one of the most stunning national parks in Uganda. A 6-hour drive from the capital city, Kampala, will take you to the magnificent statue sitting idle on the western side of Uganda.

Not only do the Mountains of the Moon have snow-capped peaks, but Rwenzori Mountain houses a vast and diverse ecosystem. The ecosystem includes wildlife, trees, and other habitats. The unique biodiversity plays a crucial role in balancing the climate in the region.

Besides housing the diverse wildlife, it also serves as a vital water source for millions of people in East and Central Africa. The glaciers of Rwenzori provide freshwater to several major rivers, including the White Nile.

Rwenzori controls the climate by acting as a natural barrier. It influences rainfall patterns and temperature. It also supplies local communities with various wild resources and is an important cultural heritage.

Adventure in the Rwenzori will be mostly by trekking. You must have a fit body and a sharp, dedicated mind to explore the Ugandan wonder. It will need something more if we’re talking about climbing to the highest peak. But most visitors don’t go that way, so we’ll stick to a general, explorer-type adventure.

1. Trekking and Hiking: The national park offers a variety of treks, ranging from one to twelve days, to experience the vastness of Rwenzori. Trekking is a must to explore it. There are two trekking routes to Rowenzori: the Central Circuit out of Nyakalengija and the Southern Circuit out of Kilembe. The Central Circuit trek is the most popular choice. It will take you through and close the nature. On the other hand, the Southern Circuit is a bit challenging.

2. Climbing: You can refer to this as extreme trekking. Adventure freaks and enthusiasts who want to summit the highest peak can go for the challenge. Climbers can have a perfect duo with the mountain while climbing to the top of it.

3. Wildlife and Nature Walks: This is mostly done around the park. Nature walks and relaxed trips will take you close to the wildlife and trees. The majestic beauty and unparalleled panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys are something you won’t forget for the rest of your life.

Rwenzori hosts several animals like leopards, monkeys, and over 200 species of birds. The dense tropical forest will let you take a closer look at the animals in their natural habitat.

4. Cultural Interaction: If you’re up for a cultural tourism experience in Rwenzori, then the typical community interactions are for you. At the base of the mountain, you will meet the Bakonzo communities. You can visit the Ruboni Community Camp, Rwenzori Turaco View Camp Site, Bulemba-Ihandiro trail, etc., as part of your adventure.

The mountain provides several things based on each person’s perspective. While some find it a mere source of adventure, others may find it a business place. Yes, the investors can bring a great profit from the mountain. It is possible to invest in and develop the activities around the mountain. Here are a few you can consider: 

1. Infrastructure Development: The region is underdeveloped and has limited access to basic infrastructure. Thus, it provides an open room for improvement. Building infrastructures such as transportation networks, roads, and bridges will allow more people to travel. In another way, it will bring money.

2. Local Businesses: Supporting local businesses is another great way to improve the quality of life for local people. It will also allow you to build a supply chain. The potential to receive multiple products and ship them overseas is also possible. But it’s also a good option to choose the local business owners and receive a share of the profit.

3. Eco-tourism and Conservation: Eco-tourism can bring in more profit by spending a little. As it practices the highest use of natural resources, the cost will be a lot lower. Investing in eco-friendly lodges, tours, and conservation programs can bring in good returns.

4. Accommodation: The tourism industry in Uganda is booming. So there is a demand in the Rwenzori as well, building slowly but at a steady pace. Investors can explore the place and build lodges, hotels, and hostels for travelers. It will also give a good return.

Climate change and environmental degradation are some of the concerns in Rwenzori. Earth’s climate is changing, and it can affect the mountain and its adjacent ecosystem. Infrastructure and accessibility issues are also present. The area is underdeveloped, and access is limited. 

So, Rwenzori doesn’t have that highlight it should get. Another challenge could be the local community and cultural sensitivity. However, these challenges can be turned into opportunities with proper support and investment. 

Rwenzori Mountain plays a significant role in Uganda’s tourism sector. But no investment comes without risks. Rwenzori has it too. Investment is challenging, but if it is Rwenzori, then the challenge becomes the opportunity.
